Two of our apprentices share their experiences, what they've learned on the job, and why they'd recommend an apprenticeship in engineering.
At MJR Power & Automation, we believe apprenticeships offer one of the strongest foundations for a successful career in engineering, combining hands-on experience, expert mentorship, and real responsibility from day one.
As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2026, we caught up with two of our engineering fitter apprentices to hear about their journeys in their own words.

Finlay Lyons came to his apprenticeship after spending time working in the office, getting to grips with electrical parts. But he wanted more. "I wanted to be more hands-on," he explains.
After a conversation with Debbie, Head of Projects, an apprenticeship emerged as the natural next step. Since then, Finlay has thrown himself into the programme, working alongside engineers Graham and Ray, getting involved in a wide range of projects, and currently building control panels.
"You learn every aspect from the ground up, right from the start," he says. His advice to anyone considering the same path? "Yes, definitely. It's a great way to learn and build your skillset."

Luke Carling chose the apprenticeship route for the unique blend it offers. "You get experience at the same time as you're learning and getting a qualification," he says. "So you get practical skills while you're also learning."
During his time at MJR Power & Automation, Luke has developed a broad range of abilities, from using tools and working as part of a team, to building panels and installing vessel equipment on site.
For anyone considering engineering as a career, his recommendation is clear: "If you want to go into engineering, I definitely would recommend doing your apprenticeship."

We're proud to support Finlay, Luke, and all of our apprentices as they build the skills, confidence, and experience needed for long and rewarding careers in engineering.
