1998–2026 | Nearly three decades of marine engineering, innovation and growth
Founded in 1998, MJR Controls Ltd, trading as MJR Power & Automation, has evolved from a specialist marine electrical engineering business into an international provider of marine power, propulsion and automation systems. Research, development and innovation have been central to that growth: from advanced vessel controls and power conversion to proprietary automation platforms and offshore charging technology. The company’s investment in intellectual property includes patent applications and granted patents associated with its marine and offshore technology development.

MJR Controls is established
MJR Controls Ltd is founded on Teesside, building its business around electrical engineering, control systems and technical support for marine and industrial customers.
Building marine and offshore expertise
MJR expands its work in vessel electrical systems, generator controls, automation, power distribution and offshore equipment, establishing enduring relationships across the maritime sector.
Growing industry recognition
MJR extends its marine service capabilities and technical partnerships, including its appointment as a UK agent for Samsung Heavy Industries in 2009. The company undertakes increasingly complex offshore and vessel electrical projects.
Turnkey systems integration and propulsion modernisation
MJR accelerates its development as a turnkey marine power and automation integrator. Its ABB Value Provider relationship strengthens its drives and automation offering. Major propulsion and control modernisation projects, including work aboard the research vessel Corystes, demonstrate its ability to engineer and integrate technically demanding systems.
Partnerships with Siemens and Danfoss
Alongside ABB, MJR develops relationships with Siemens and Danfoss, drawing on their drive, power conversion and automation technologies to support complex marine propulsion, power management and electrification projects. Exact partnership commencement dates should be confirmed before publication.
R&D investment in maritime electrification and shore power
MJR expands its research and development programme to address the challenges of vessel decarbonisation. Work on innovative offshore charging concepts, electric crew transfer vessel applications, automated electrical connections and energy transfer systems leads to engineering prototypes and testing. The company also introduces QuayPower, its containerised shore power offering.
ELSYS expands the group’s international capability
MJR works closely with its sister company ELSYS, based in Vigo, Spain. ELSYS begins operating in 2022, providing a complementary specialist capability in vessel automation and control; together, the companies develop integrated marine power and automation systems.
Prototyping, testing and intellectual property development
MJR and its project partners progress offshore charging R&D from design concepts to engineered prototypes, controlled testing and practical demonstrations. Successful harbour trials at the Port of Blyth in 2023 validate core elements of automated connection, cable handling and power transfer. Across its technology programme, MJR and associated entities pursue patent protection through applications and patent grants in relevant jurisdictions.
Commercial launch of jointly developed VAMOS technology
MJR and sister company ELSYS jointly develop and commercially launch VAMOS — Vessel Automation & Machinery Operating System. The proprietary platform translates their combined engineering R&D into a marine automation product for vessel monitoring, machinery control, power management and energy management, suitable for newbuild and retrofit applications.
Charge Offshore commercialises offshore charging innovation
Building on MJR’s multi-year R&D programme, Charge Offshore is established by MJR, Blackfish Engineering and Tidal Transit as the dedicated commercialisation entity for offshore vessel charging technology. Successful offshore trials at the Nobelwind wind farm demonstrate the progression from invention and prototype to practical marine application. Associated intellectual property is supported by a portfolio of patent applications and granted rights; grant status and territorial scope vary by patent family.
Scaling engineering capability and product development
MJR continues to invest in Teesside engineering and production capacity, supporting both delivery of complex marine power and automation projects and ongoing product development in vessel electrification, advanced control and offshore energy transfer.
MJR and ELSYS deliver complex vessel life extension
MJR and ELSYS deliver an ABS-approved electrical repowering and life-extension programme for a specialist research vessel, including switchboards, DC propulsion drives, generator controls, power management and automation. The project demonstrates how the companies apply their combined engineering and product-development capabilities to demanding real-world marine applications.
