Sector Overview

Supporting Critical Electrical Systems on Offshore Platforms

Offshore production assets depend on electrical systems that must remain dependable despite demanding duty cycles, restricted access and equipment that may have been in service for many years. When drives, switchgear or control equipment becomes unreliable or obsolete, the challenge is often not simply replacing a component: the replacement has to work with the existing installation and fit within a tightly controlled maintenance or shutdown programme.

MJR supports offshore platforms with electrical engineering, repair, testing, retrofit and replacement of critical equipment. Capability covers LV and HV switchgear, variable speed drives and converters, generators and transformers, UPS and power electronics, automation, instrumentation and associated control systems. Where existing equipment can no longer be supported, MJR can engineer a replacement around the retained installation rather than requiring the wider system to be rebuilt.

Who MJR supports Offshore platform operators, asset managers, maintenance managers, electrical teams, service departments and project teams responsible for maintaining, upgrading or replacing offshore electrical power and control equipment.

Sector Challenges

Maintaining Ageing Electrical Assets Within Limited Offshore Windows

Platform upgrades are often carried out around equipment that cannot simply be taken out of service for long periods. Existing interfaces, obsolete hardware, offshore access and shutdown sequencing all affect how the work has to be engineered and delivered.

Obsolete & Unsupported Equipment

Older VFDs, converters, switchgear, PLC equipment and electronic assemblies can become difficult to maintain as manufacturers withdraw parts and technical support. MJR specifically provides troubleshooting and engineered replacement packages where continued repair is no longer practical.

Restricted Shutdown Windows

Major electrical replacements may need to be completed during a planned shutdown with little tolerance for delay. Surveys, engineering, fabrication and testing therefore need to be completed before mobilisation wherever possible. The Eni Douglas project was delivered within a planned platform shutdown.

Existing System Interfaces

Replacement equipment must work correctly with retained motors, cables, protection, control systems and upstream distribution. Interface definition is particularly important when only part of an ageing installation is being replaced.

Drive & Power Quality Issues

Large variable speed drives and power-electronic equipment can introduce requirements around harmonics, filtering, protection and compatibility with the existing electrical network. MJR’s consultancy capability includes harmonic, load-flow, short-circuit and protection studies.

Offshore & Hazardous-Area Requirements

Equipment selection, installation and modifications need to reflect the operating environment and project-specific safety requirements. MJR's engineering capability includes safe and hazardous-area design, electrical control systems, fire and gas systems and safety shutdown systems.

Sector Benefits

Extending Equipment Life Without Losing Sight of the Existing Installation

For an established offshore asset, the right answer is not always wholesale replacement. MJR assesses what can remain in service, what needs attention and how replacement equipment will interact with the existing platform electrical system.

Planned Obsolescence Management

Unsupported equipment can be identified and addressed before failure forces an unplanned response, allowing repair, spares or replacement strategies to be developed around operational priorities.

Targeted Retrofit

Drives, switchboards, controls and power-electronic equipment can be replaced as defined packages while retaining serviceable parts of the wider installation.

Better Maintainability

Modern replacement equipment can provide improved fault information, diagnostics and access to supported components, giving maintenance teams a clearer route for future servicing and troubleshooting.

Tested Before Mobilisation

Where practical, replacement switchboards, control panels and electrical packages can be engineered, constructed and tested before offshore installation, reducing the amount of unresolved work taken into the shutdown window. MJR's service model combines in-house engineering and construction with offshore installation and commissioning capability.

How MJR Supports the Sector

Typical Applications

Electrical Support for Critical Offshore Platform Systems

MJR's capability is most relevant where ageing electrical equipment, production-critical loads or planned upgrade work requires engineering support beyond straightforward component replacement.

VFD & Motor Drive Systems

Fault finding, servicing, replacement and retrofit of variable speed drives and converters used on pumps and other electrically driven platform equipment, including associated filtering and control interfaces.

LV & MV Switchgear

Testing, maintenance, overhaul and replacement of platform switchboards, motor control centres and distribution equipment, together with protection and associated control systems.

Power Conversion & Essential Power

Support for UPS systems, converters, power electronics, generators, transformers, excitation systems and other equipment forming part of the platform electrical supply.

Automation, Instrumentation & Control

PLC, SCADA and DCS systems, instrumentation, control panels, monitoring systems and project-specific safety or shutdown control equipment. MJR's current engineering scope includes these systems alongside electrical and pneumatic/hydraulic control equipment.
